In a monumental collaboration, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has partnered with the University of Stuttgart to embark on a transformative journey, crafting two formidable supercomputers, Hunter and Herder. This dynamic initiative represents a remarkable leap towards achieving exascale computing, reshaping the landscape of computational capabilities.

Hunter, the inaugural supercomputer, is poised to come online by 2025, marking the retirement of the incumbent supercomputer, Hawk, at the University. This milestone represents a crucial step towards the realization of Herder, an exascale marvel poised to usher in a new era for high-performance computing in Germany. The unveiling of Herder is anticipated to be completed by 2027.

Hunter's architectural prowess is rooted in the HPE Cray EX4000 supercomputer blueprint, incorporating cutting-edge Cray ClusterStor storage technology, the HPE Cray Programming Environment, and the integration of four HPE Slingshot interconnects within each of its 136 nodes. Hunter will be powered by the formidable AMD Instinct MI300A accelerated processing unit, among other specifications, propelling it to a staggering peak performance of 39 petaFLOPS. It is imperative to acknowledge that Hunter's role is that of a transitional guardian, paving the way for Herder, which is anticipated to harness speeds approaching one quintillion FLOPS.

Fostering Research Excellence

The driving force behind these remarkable supercomputers stems from visionary backing, generously provided by the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the State of Baden-Württemberg's Ministry of Science, Research, and Arts. These supercomputers are poised to revolutionize the research landscape, amplifying progress across domains such as engineering, applied sciences, climate change, public administration, and essential business applications.

HPE's commendable attainment of the German Supercomputer contract follows in the wake of two other distinguished contracts secured earlier in the year. In November 2023, the UK Government fortified its commitment to innovation by investing £225 million in a national AI Research Resource, in partnership with the University of Bristol, aimed at propelling the UK into the echelons of supercomputing supremacy. Preceding this, in October 2023, Hewlett Packard Enterprise achieved a significant milestone by delivering an AI supercomputer to CRIANN, a renowned research institution located in France, geared towards accelerating breakthroughs in scientific research.

Beyond Boundaries: HPE's GreenLake Revolution

Apart from its substantial contributions to the realm of supercomputing, HPE is forging ahead in the realm of cloud computing, epitomized by its pioneering HPE GreenLake platform. This year has borne witness to an impressive adoption rate, with esteemed organizations such as Inedys, Fastweb (a prominent Italian Telecom Operator), Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration, Dubai Islamic Bank, Wihuri Group, Ashok Leyland, DSolution (a distinguished Swedish service provider), and Toppan Forms aligning with the GreenLake vision.
