The lipstick effect refers to the phenomenon in which consumers tend to purchase small, affordable luxury items, such as cosmetics, during economic downturns as a way to improve their mood and feel better about their circumstances. The theory is that these small purchases provide a relatively inexpensive way to boost one's mood and self-esteem, similar to the way that applying lipstick can make a person feel more confident and put-together.

The lipstick effect is often cited as a way to explain why certain industries, such as cosmetics and personal care, tend to be more resistant to economic downturns than others. For example, during the Great Recession of 2008, cosmetics sales in the United States reportedly increased even as overall retail sales declined.

There is some evidence to support the existence of the lipstick effect, although the extent to which it actually occurs and the underlying psychological mechanisms at work are still the subject of debate. Some research has suggested that the lipstick effect may be more prevalent among women than men, and that it may be more likely to occur in times of economic uncertainty or stress.

Overall, the lipstick effect serves as a reminder that consumer behavior is complex and can be influenced by a variety of factors, including economic conditions, personal psychology, and cultural norms.

I completely agree with your point. but I think lipstick is not all bad or good either.
Lipstick can help you become more beautiful and confident, confidence is an extremely necessary thing to have a perfect life. But If that luxury is more than you can afford or need, it's really damaging.

i agree your talk but red lips. According to color psychology, red is the color most associated with passion, action and energy
. Red represents confidence, lust and in some cultures,
it represents luck. No wonder there's something so sultry and divine about a woman who wears a bold red lip.
